The Porke, in its complaint to the Powers regarding Grecian interference in Crete, states that 24 Greek officers with rifles and ammunition have been landed in Orete. Turkish troops continue to commit raids in Macedonia, and have massacred 80 aged villagers. Lord Rosebery declines to advise England to intervene alone in Crete. A thousand Kurdish cavalry have arrived at Stamboul, much to the alarm of the Armenians in the city and of the Young Turkish Party. A band of Albanians murdered the Turkish Consul at Vrana. The Italian Cortes have sanctioned the purchase by Spain of the armoured cruiser Guiseppe Garibaldi, 6500 tons, 18,000 h.p., now of the Italian fleet. Dr Nansen's ship, the Fram, drifted with the ice to latitude 85deg 57min, and was liberated from the ice on 10th July, reaching open water on 13th August. Dr Nansen will rejoin the yesßel and proceed in her to Christiania. Her return has been made the occasion of a great celebration in Norway, and King Oscar himself highly felicitated Dr Nansen on the success of the expedition. It is now said that M. Andre"e iind3 that the season is too far advanced for his proposed balloon expedition, and he intends returning, to await a more favourable opporlunity. Autocars are now running about Paris like cabs. A her being warned that he would be expelled from the country on a charge of inciting men to strike, Mr Ben Tillett, the well-known labour leader, has been arrested at Antwerp. Sen or Sagasta urges that the Spanish operations against the insurgents in Cuba should be oarried on with greater vigour, in order to show that Spain has no fear of American interference.
