The Blenheim Bohoola have had to be closed on account of a diphtheria epidemic. Sir William Armstrong and Company will establish works in Japan, where it has been decided to remodel the navy. We understand another of our at present idle hemp mills will commence work in a week or two. The Hev. George Aitkens will hold services, both morning and evening, at All Saints Church to-morrow. Mr Meredith, M.H.R., will conduct services at the Primitive Methodist Church both to-morrow morning and evening. The evening Fervice will be on temperance and the 1.0.G.T. Lodge will attend in rega'ia. Members are requested to ba at the Lodge room at 6 o'clock. Mr Loveday is giving great discounts just now. Ihis is what we all want as money is scarce. The advertisement fully explains itself. If Mr A. B. Osborne's customers are looking for hia advertisement in its old place they will not find it, as it has been shifted to a space over the leader. This is the result of one lady doctor'i eloquencs. „ Petroleum oil was struck at New Plymouth on Thursday at 2010 feet, the oil flowing out of the bore. This supply is in a sandstone formation, and is better than the former oil found in papa formation. The oil is accompanied by a great pressure of gas. The following resolutions were discussed and unanimously carried at the Quarterly Meeting of the 1.0.G.T. at Bongotea on Wednesday— That each lodge be requested to collect for their several localities the amount required for the electoral funds ; that this meeting urges npbn the present Government the necessity of passing this session the National Option Bill, and the Secretary forward this petition to the Premier ; that this meeting requests that the Cabinet announce the decision to set up a Royal Commission on the police administration, failing this it be made a platform at the coming election ; that all the lodges be persuaded to aot in unison for a prohibition candidate. When Scott was brought up at the Supreme Court for sentence on the charge of stealing 10 sheep belonging to William Farmer, of Fitzherbert, Mr Skerrett asked that the prisoner should be admitted to probation. The prisoner, he said, was a young man who had hitherto borne a good I character, and his case was one which the First Offenders Probation Act was intended to meet. His Honour said the case was a somewhat peouliar one. He would remand the prisoner until Tuesday, in order that a report might be obtained from the Probation Officer. An exhausted pigeon fell into the hands of the New York police lately.
