As to the fenoing of the railway lines, the Minister of Railways says he is ready to meet the settlers. The department has old sleepers and rails, the settlers can supply wire, and the difficulty and anxiety will disappear. He will be happy to meet the settlers on this base, not only on the Featheratou line but all over the oolony.

A week to-day an event unique in the history of our township occurs — laying the foundation block? of a Sunday schoolroom i? the event. There are forty-two blocks to bo laid and all but two or three are already appropriated by friends and sympathisers. In the Supreme Court Austin Kirby and W. G. Ba?seU pleaded not guilty to a charge of having conspired to defeat the ends of justice, and of having devised and effected the escape of Kirby to Sydney. After argument the Chief Justice thought there was no proof that Bassett knew of the charge against Kirby. There was no eviience to show what Kirby was escaping from. He could not allow the case to go to the jury. There was no direot evidence that Bassett knew of these informations against Kirby. They must prove that he knew of Kirby'a guilt, and that waa a difficult thing to do. That being the case they could not convict. The foreman said the jury were unanimous that there was no direct proof that Kirby was on the steamer at al!. Bassett wa3 then discharged.

One of the drawbacks of country life, at least to the small settler, is undoubtedly the increased price he has to pay for any articles of clothing or general drapery, by reason of the extra charges for freight or carriage. This drawback need exist no longer, for extra charges are done away with under the new parcel system which has been inaugurated at Te Aro House, Wellington.
