The startling announcement is made that there are over 160 lepers in Paris. One of thesa was picked up in a f tinting condition and taken to the St. Louis Hospital, where there is a special leper ward. The patients are attended to by an infirmarian who suffers periodically from a jnild form of leprosy. Dr Hallopeau, of the same hospital, does not oonsider the leprosy now in France aa strongly contagious. A. remarkable take of fish was made last Friday night from the boats of Mr W. Huroomb, when working on the Terawhiti side of Island Bay, is reported by the Wanganui Herald. The latest trotting sulky ia an entirely unique departure. It has only one wheel (whioh is of oourse air-tyred and tangentspoked), and the driver site over it as on a bicycle. There are no shafts, the frame being modelled somewhat after the principle of a safety bicycle, which, extending forward, iB fastened to the centre of the horses. This arrangement although keeping the sulky upright, yet allows euffioient ' play ' for the wheel when taking corners.
A deputation representing the flax industry waited upon the Minister of Lands on Tuesday morning, urging that an expert be sent to America and Great Britain in connection with tha grading of fibre, and to make a general canvass of manufacturers as to what are the causes injuring the sale of the New Zealand article. Petitions in favour of this course were presented on behalf of Manawatu, Wellington and Marlborough flax growers and they suggested that Mr John Holmes, of Wellington and Marlborough, should be selected as grader. The Minister promised to give the matter full consideration.
Mr J. G. Wilson introduced the deputation of members interested in the flax trade to the Minister for Lands and presented a petition signed by flaxmillers, storekeepers, and merchants in the Foxton district urging Government to take immediate steps to revive the hemp industry in the colony, and pointing out that its expansion largely affected the interests of the colonists. He also expressed the opinion that the revival of the industry would go a long way towards the solution of the unemployed difficulty, as it would absorb a great deal of the unskilled labour of the colony. Mr Hogg also spoke in favour of granting the petition.
