The second reading of the Uganda Railway Bill has been carried in the House of Lords. The Prime Minister (Lord Salisbury) said the line would largely promote the security of British rule in Central Africa.
Later news from Spitsbergen with reference to the balloon expedition of M. Andr£e and his companions to the North Pole states that the balloon split just before starting, and that the attempt to explore the pole has been deferred.
In the House of Commons, Mr 6. N. Curzon, Parliamentary Secretary to the Foreign Office, stated that the Powers were opposed to Greece annexing Crete.
He also stated that the British fleet in Cretan waters was unwilling to resort to force, but it had greatly helped to prevent disorder.
The House of Commons has rejected the leading amendments made by the House of Lords to the Irish Land Bill, including those by Lord Cloncurry, and have modified others. A commercial expedition from Blackburn, Lancashire, is about to visit China, with a view to the development of the cotton trade. The present intention is that the expedition shall remain there for a period of three years.
