Manawatu County Council.
The ordinary monthly meeting was held at Sanson yesterday at 11.80 a.m. Present — Crs Ransom (chairman), Masters, Hammond, Taylor, Robinson and Strang. The minutes of the previous ordinary and the special meeting to consider the application for position of clerk were read and confirmed. The following correspondence was read:— From E. J. Armstrong, Secretary Sluggish River Board, in reference to two bridges constructed, and asking for a refund of £9, the cost of same ; also stating that application had been made to Board from Messrs Simpson, Luxford and Pyke to clean out drain by Oroua Bridge, and that the Council was willing to subsidise the work to the extent of Is a chain ; and wishing to know if statement of the deputation was made with the oonourfence of the Council. From F. Lucinsky, saying he was desirous of resigning his position of roadman, as from the 31st August. From H. Proctor, S. Maddock, M. Holland, Goodwin, H. Rowlands, Joshua Mathers, Jefferie3, M. C. Doherty. James Collins, W. Parlaine, Young and Yanko applying for the position of roadman to the County. , The Council decided to appoint Mr Goodwin as road man to the County in the place of Mr Lucinsky. From Peter Stewart, applying to have the name of Matthew Bros, placed on rate roll for part section 153, Sandon Township, in place of his. From Railway Engineer's Department, Wanganui, referring to condi tion of County tram line. From Rangitikei County Council, saying the estimated cost of the river protective works now being done on Mr J. Bull's property near Bulls bridge is £475. From C. H. McLean, in reply, referring to property at Awahuri. From L. W. Dalrymple, agrpeing to a road to be made through her property at Mount Stewart provided a substantial fence is erected. From John Prior, solicitor, sending certificate fur signature of the Chairman re Wheeler. From J. Nairn, saying he had been asked by a number of settlers to complain of the deplorable state, of the Taikorea Road. From H. Hinks, poundkeeper, refuting the statement of Mr Hoffmann re illegal impounding. From "Wm. Darrah, asking that James Penny's name be placed in rate book in lieu of his for section No. 158 Campbelltown. From Rangitikei County Council, saying the warrant for the construction of the Bridge over the- Rangitikei River at Bulls has been issued, and the contract for its construction had been let for the sum of £2189. •From Land and Income Tax Department, notifying that a voucher for the payment of £125 as subsidy foe the year 1895-96. From Treasury re same. From Chairman Horseshoe Drainage "Board, requesting that a pipe culvert be put in on Jones' Line. From Dr Lamb, reporting a case of scarlet fever at Moutoa. From W. B. Giesen, enclosing a letter from Miss Dalrymple re road through Hunter's land to Feilding. From J. Herbert Hankins, re Shannon Feri'y lease. Mr R. G. Edwards waited on the Council and handed in a written request on behalf the Sandon Public Hall Committee that the rates due be struck off, as the receipts had been far below the expenditure, and they were not in a position to pay them. The Council, after consideration, decided that the letter lay on the table. Proposed by Cr Taylor, seconded by Cr RobinsoD, That the names of John and Henry Matthews be placed on the rate-book for part section 153, Sandon Township, instead of Peter Stewart ; and that the name of James Penny be placed in the rate-book instead of Wm. Darral in respect of section No. 158, Campbelltown. Carried. Proposed by Cr Robinson, seconded by Cr Strang, That the proposal of the Rangitikei County
Council re protecting the river bank at the Bulls bridge be agreed to. Carried. Proposed by Cr Taylor, seconded by Cr Hammond, That this Council take the necessary steps (under the Loans to Local Bodies Act), to raise the amount required to meet their share of the construction of the new bridge over the Rangitikei River at Bulls. Carried. Proposed by Cr Robinson, seconded by Cr Taylor, That the tender of W. H. Mathers' be accepted for the Taikorea Road. Carried. Proposed by Cr Robinson, seconded by Cr Ransom, That the overseer get Eellow road sanded and a portion formed at a cost not more than £10 Carried. Proposed by Cr Strang, seconded by Cr Robinson, That Messrs Strang Bros, be allowed to run 1 inch iron pipe under the Moutoa Road, metal to be carefully and properly replaced. Carried. Proposed by Cr Taylor, seconded by Cr Hammond, That Mr Purnell (county clerk) be appointed Inspector of slaughterhouses. Carried. The Council went into Committee to consider the future working of the tramway, and the following resolutions were carried : — . Proposed by Cr Robinson, seconded by Cr Masters, That Mr S. H Wrigley be appointed guard and manager of the tram, and that he receive 8s per day. Proposed by the chairman, seconded by Cr Taylor, That the Tram manager get the alteration recommended by the traffic manager attended to at once. The overseer's report was read and adopted and the accounts were passed for payment.
