Mr McCloskey notifies he has removed into larger and more convenient premises, which have been specially fitted up for him by Messrs P. Hennessy & Co. Intense cold was experienced in Central Otago about ten days ago, the thermometer registering 10 degrees below freezing point. A pot of ink in the office of the Mount Ida Chronicle was frozen hard after the fire had been burning for an hour and a half. The new railway bridge aoross the Oroua river is finished.- The bridge is a truss bridge of 60ft Bpans, built on two rows of ironbark piles. The piles are strongly braced with old iron rails. The timber in the bridge is all iron bark, and the work was done by the Railway Department. That is just so. During a recent debate, the Premier being the speaker, Mr McGuire inquired of the Speaker, " I suppose that you, Sir, cannot prevent prevent the Minister from drawing on bis imagination for facts?" To which Mr Speaker replied " No ; my control over members does not extend that far.' Two specimens of rare fi9h called scopelus, found on the New Brighton beach, have been presented to the Christchurch Museum, and are now believed to be the first of the kind found in the South Island. They are very much like the frost fish in shape. At night they swim on the top of the sea, and are of a silver oolour. At the Spitttemarkt, in Berlin, there ia a coffee tavern where waiters and tips are oonspiouous by their absence. All along the walla of the establishment automatic machines are placed, each with a label revealing its contents— beer, coffee, tea, <fee. Clearly, Bengal , tigers must be expensive things to keep. The Hawke's Bay Herald says :— There evidently very little intention of proceeding with many polioy measures this session. The bulk of the Budget proposals will be held over for the general election. It is persistently stated that Ministers intend to propose a large increase in the land tax so as to capture the city votes, but that pro* posal would be resisted by some of their own followers, who rightly assert that this cry comes only from those who have not land to be taxed, And who are utterly indifferent whether or not the farmers of the oountry sink or swim under the heavy taxation imposed on them. At the meeting of the Borough Council of Feilding last Friday night the Mayor reported that the scheme for lighting the town would have to fall through owing to the inability of the Counoil to borrow sufficient money to carry out the necessary work. The amount required to establish the electric light was £8000, but apparently the Counoil nad no authority to borrow that sum. In the proceedings which had been taken hitherto sub-section 1 of section 182, of the Munioipal Corporation Act, had unfortunately been overlooked. This read : — ' The Counoil may from time to time raise a special loan for the purpose of undertaking some special public work in such portion of the Borough, provided that the aggregate amount of all loans to be raised for such purpose shall not exceed in any portion of a borough four times the amount which may be levied by general rates in such portion of the borough in any one year.' The. amount which may be levied in the proposed special rating district in any one year was £500, therefore, the utmost the Counoil could borrow would be £2000. - Under this system any of the parcels advertised will be sent to any address in New Zealand, post free, the prices charged being exactly the same aa those at which the goods are sold over the counter in Wellington.
