The Flax Market.
Mr Robert Gardner has supplied us with the following figures from the latest fibre report :—
Stocks in London and Liverpool, 1896 and 1895— Manila (bales) 99,828—54,886; N.Z. Flax (tons) 1596—2320; Bisal (bales) 2786---5154.
Aa a manila bale only weighs 2£ cwt., and sisal B£cwt, to make a true comparison manila would be over 44,000 tons, N.Z. flax 1596 tons, and sisal not quite 1200 tons. The prices are quoted at — Manila, £17 10a to £18 per ton, strong; sisal, £16 to £17, weak ; and N.Z. flax, £14 15s to £15 ss, weak.
Mr Gardner says the demand in Wellington is nil, except at ruination prices. There are inquiries, however, being made for large parcels.
