The Silver Convention in St. Louis has nominated Mr Bryan as the Democratic candidate for the Presidency, and Mr Sewell for the VicePresidency.
The Democratic delegates who favour gold currency, representing 11 States, are arranging for a Convention to be held in September. The Populists have nominated Mr Bryan for the Presidency. The Cretan insurgents threaten that unless the demands of the Christian deputies are accepted within a week they will resntne fighting. The entire province of Enyrna, in Madagascar, has broken out in open revolt to French rule.
An engagement has taken place between the Spanish forces under General Bernal and the Cuban insurgents.
The latter were defeated, and had 250 killed.
Li Hung Chang is discussing with the French Government the basis of a commercial treaty favourable to France.
He has purchased a large number of rifles in France, and is engaging cavalry instructors there. He proposes to obtain officers from Germany to teach the Chinese gun* nery, and will secure naval instructors from Great Britain.
