Lord Grey, Cecil Rhodes and Colonel Ehodes having arrived at Matoppo Hills, General Carrington, Commander of the Forces, directed that an attack be made on the enemy's position. The natives were shelled oat of the hills, and followed to Babyam, a stronghold among the kopjes and the caves at the son roe of the Tuli River. The Matabele succeeded in holding the caves, though they lost 60 men. The English loss .was three killed and 11 wounded. Coope's scouts are holding the southward passes to prevent a retreat. Captain Baden-Powell had .a narrow escape of being captured. The enemy in the Matoppo hills are being severely pressed, but are not yet overcome. Fifty of their scouts fought their way homewards through a narrow defile for two hours. A reporter of the Afrioan Review says the moral effect of the fighting is, so far, doubtful, and the difficulty of attacking the Matabele position is almost insuperable.
