The Ryley Bankruptcy.

A meeting of creditors in the estate of John Byley, trading as R. Anderson and Co., millers, was held at Dunedin on Monday. Daring the meeting the following extraordinary statements were made: — The Assignee read a balancesheet prepared by By ley on the Slat October last, showing liabilities in round numbers of £80,000 and assets £82,500. The value of the stock was put down at £45,000. Inquiry would have to be made as to what came of that stock. The bankrupt said he was requested to prepare the balance-sheet to present the thing in the best aspect he could, as the Bank was going over to the Bank of New Zealand. Asked who requested that, he replied that it was the manager of tbe Bank here. Mr Michie (Bank of New Zealand) said that referred to Mr Ewirig, who had given him authority to deny the statement. The bankrupt said he was prepared to give evidence on the point. He would look on the balauce-sheit as highly coloured. He had been requested to keep the mining stock (Jut. Mr Michie, on behalf ofEwing, Aeoied this, rlio that the effect of

putting in the mining stock would Be to swell the assets. It was pointed out that the examination would only be relevant if Ryley got auy credit through this balance-sheet. He said he had not ; on the contrary, the liability had , been reduced by £200,000. The meeting was adjourned to 14th July.
