The " Silver Domino '* is a book published as by an anonymous author, but, it is said, the authoress is Marie Corelii. It may very well be by its style which is severely saioasiic. Here is an early statement. " For we live in a little age, and nothing great can breathe in the stifling atmostphere of our languid, listless indifference to God and man." Again :— Consider our Browning mania ! Our Stanley-measles 1 With what dubious and half- bewildered enthusiasm we laid the mortal re mains of our incomprehensible " Sordello" to rest in Wastminster Abbey I With what- vulgar staring and ridiculous parade we gathered together to see the " cute " Welsh trader in ivory wedded to his " Ten nant for life" in the same wrongfully used sacred edifice ! Men lost nothing by outwardly expressing a certain reverence for women ; women gained a great deal by outwardly expressing their gentie acknowledgement of that reverence. «' Manner maketh the man," say 3 the old adage, and if that be true ; then there are no men, for certainly there are no manners -ab lf*ast, not among the " upper ten.' 1 lamin a position to judge, for 1 am somewhat of a favourite at Court, where manners aye not at a very high premium. The writer continues " Hurry kills • manner,' and there eau be no doubt that in this day we are ali in a frantic hurry. I don't know whafc about, I'm sure. We are after no good than I can sec. I have tried to fathom the reason of this extraordinary and vilely unbecoming baste, and the only apparent cause I can discover is thafc we are trying to get as much out of life as possible before we die. The means, however, entirely defeat the object."
