» The ordinary meeting of the above was held at Sanson yesterday at 11.80 a.m. Present — The chairman (Or Ransom), Grs Robinson, Masters, Taylor, Wilson, Hammond and Strang. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The following correspondence was read ;-— From Wm. J. Thompson, Bongotea, re his name appearing on the defaulter's list, as he held a receipt for rates paid. From Richard Bowater, Sandon, applying for a • grant of £10 to Sandon Small Bird Nuisance Club. From Treasury Department, saying a voucher had passed tha audit of £100 on account of £650 loan for metalling Rowe's Line and portion of Hammond's Line. From A. E. Bull, asking for an extension of time to finish his contract, as the weather had been bad. From Messrs Rutherford & Son, re the condition of the slaughterhouse used by them. From R. G. Edwards, applying for a slaughtering license. From E. Do Ridder, Fox ton, applying for U3e of road reserve running from Buseell-street to section 454, and offering to pay 80s per annum for same. From Robert Barker, wishing his name placed on rate-roll for section 88.: Sandon Block, in place of Jane Simpson. From John Burr, giving the number of cattle killed by him in April. From General Government, enclosing Jas. McKerrow's report on Qre&tford Levin proposed railway line. From Palmerston North Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, re out*, break of typhoid fever at Oroua Bridge. From B. R. Hunt, Auckland, withdrawing from the GreatfordLevin railway project, as he could not afford to waste any mora valua ble time. From J. Herbert Hankins, enclosing the copy of the agreement between the Council and Messrs Stewart and Hunt. From J. Mudford, complaining of tbt 10 per cent that had been charged on his rates. From H. Wilson, wanting particulars in reference to rates owing by him. From Messrs Stafford, Tread well and Feild, notifying sale of portion of Carnarvon Estate to Messrs Jas. McKelvie, Thomas Clarke, John B. Ralston and William Taylor. From Hocken Bros., asking that the name of H. Hocken be placed on rate roll for section 67 and 58. From the Auditor-General, wanting information as to rates struck. Outward correspondence and the Treasurer's report was rend: Proposed by Cr Ransom, seconded by Cr Robinson, That A. E. Bull be given extension of time to complete his contract on Campbell-town-Longburn Road. Carried. Proposed by Cr Masters, seconded by Cr Robiuson, That £10 be . granted to the Sandon Small Birds Nuisance Club for this year as requested, and that the secretary be asked for the balance sheet. Carried. Proposed by Cr Robinson, seconded by Cr Ma3ter?, That the names of Harry Hocken for section 57 and Albert Hocken for 58, Oroua Downs, be placed on the rate roll in the place of F. and H. Hocken. Carried. Proposed by Cr Strang, seconded by Cr Masters, That the cloik write to Mrs E. De Ridder informing her that this Council cannot grant a lease of the roadway mentioned in her letter to the Council. Carried. Proposed by Cr Robinson, seconded by Cr Ransom, That tbe Mine of Robert Barker be placed on tbe rate roll for section 88, Sandon Block, in the place of Christopher Simpson for Mrs Jane Simpson, and that the name of James Cockbarn be placed on the roll instead of A. Percy Lasenby for sections 236,
287, Featherafcone Block, anl that the name of F. H. Luxford instead of G. H. Luxford in accordance with their letters. Carri-.d. A deputation consisting of Messrs P. Stewart and Gieaen, waited on the Council in reference to a road to be opened through Native property at Awahuri, which they contended would shortf.n the distance to Foilding on fcho main road. They were requested to obtain the signatures of the natives interested, and the Council would then deal with the matter. • Proposed by Crßobin3on, seconded by Cr Masters, That Mr McKerrow'a report on the proposed sale of tbe tramway be received, and that the chairman and J. G. Wilson be a deputation to interview the Government on the mattei\— Carried. Proposed by Ci- Robinson, seconded by Cr Taylor, That tenders be called for forming continuation of Taikorea Road, tenders to be in by next meeting.— Carried. Proposed by Cr Ransom, seconded by Cr Taylor, That the estimate of receipts and expenses for year 1896---97 be passed as read. — Carried. Tbe Council held a special meeting at which the following resolutions were carried : — Proposed by Cr Ransom, seconded by Cr Taylor, That this Council (under Rating Act, clause 27, 1894, and Counties' Act, 1886, clause 150), do now strike a separate rate of one half-penny in the £ on the rateable Value of all the rateable property within each of the ridings of fc'andon and Awahuri and a separate rate of | of a penny in the £ on the rateable value of all the rateable property within the ridings of Carnarvon, Campbell, Waitohi, and Kawakawa, and a separate rate of J of a penny in the £ on the rateable value of all the rateable property within the riding of Mount Stewart in the Manawatu County for the year ending 81st, 1897, and that the same shall become due and payable in one sum at the County Office, Sanson, on July Ist, 1896. Proposed by Cr Ransom, seconded by Cr Taylor, That this Council (under clause 87, Rating Aot, 1894, and clause 148, Counties Act, 1896), do now strike a General County Rate of one halfpenny in the £ on all the rateable property in the Man-> awatu County for the year ending March 31st, 1897, and that the same shall be payable in one sum at the County Office, Sanson, on July Ist, 1896. On resuming its ordinary sitting. The chairman niovtd a notioe of motion that the Council take into consideration tbe advisability of raising a loan of £6COO under the Loans to Local Bodies Act, for the purpose of metalling various roads in the Manawa^u County.
