A new appb, that is if a tree has been growing for 26 years can properly be so desoribed. At present it is, anyhow, an unnamed variety and was grown as a seedling by Mr George Nye. The apple is a beauty to look at, good to eat or cook and a good keeper. It stands 3£ inches high and has a circumference of ten inches. Tue colour might be described as a yellowish pink with deeper red stripes. It is much after the shape of the Pearmain. How would it be to christen it the " Suanyside ?" It is almost settled that the Rev. George Aitkenß will resign from this parish, and move to Hawera. We ought to. have drawn attention some days ago to the shop windows of the Messrs Loveday's, the one with the hats for ladies' in is very tastefully set np. The Clerk to the Manawatu County Council gives notice of the intention of the Council to strike at its next meeting a general County rate of one half-penny in the pound, and a separate rate of one halfpenny in the pound in the Ridings of Sandon and Awahou, and one of three-eighths of a penny in the other Ridinga except Mount Stewart, which will only be a farthing. He, however docß not like them very much for eating. The Vinegar Hill Bridge, over the Rangitikei River, the contract for which was taken by Mr Griffin, of Hawke's Bay, is now completed, says the Post. The structure is 407 feet in length, in .t'iree spans, and is built of wood resting on iron cylinders filled with concrete. The contract price was £6725, towards which the Government provides £1700, the Rangitikei and Kiwitea County Councils finding the rest and carrying out tb« work.
