A Lady's Letter.

Wellington, May 24, 1896. It seams a long time since I last wrote to yoii, but the truth is there has been very little going on here during the last fortnight. I mean, of oours», in th« way of entertain ment and social festivities etc. It is said that the coming session is not going to be very gay, but I fancy that ii only a saying, for who can tell? It was with much regret that the -friends of Mrs Walter Johnston heard that she did not intend residing in Wellington again. Mrs Johnston was one of the most popular hostesses here, and her dances and dinner-parties will be greatly missed during the coining season. 1 hear that Lady Alioe Boyle will most likely be going up to the Bangitikei for some hunting, very soon, and will stay with Mrs W, Johnston «t Waituna. The latest engagement announced is that between Miss Phoebe S«ddon, eldest unmarried daughter of the Premier, to Mr F. Dyer, of this town. I haven't heard when the wedding is to be. A very large number of oards have been issued by Dr and Mrs Grace, inviting their friends to the " Wedding Reception of their daughter Miss Maude Grace to Mr John G. Duncan," which is to take place next Thursday afternoon. It is sure to be a very pretty wedding, so I most try to give you a good account of it in my next letter. The Government Insurance Literary and Social Club gave their an- j Dual entertainment on Saturday. night. There were a large number of guests present who all appeared to be thoroughly enjoying themselves. The first part of the evening was devoted to music and recitations, the performers being the Messrs Morris Fox, G. Kennedy, Spackman, Reid Palmer, Crombi and others. And on a verj good floor we had several dances. The Premier and Mrs Bed don were present, also Miss Seddon, who looked very nice in a soft white gown, much trimmed with lace ; her sister Miss Mary, wore a becoming cream gown ; Mrs Lucirie, handsome black silk gown .trimmed with lace and jet ; Miss Luckie, pretty brown eh)l silk trimmed with

cream lace ; Hon. 3. G. Ward, Mr Luckie and others. The Hutt ladies have issued invitations for a ball to be held in the Oddfellowi' Hall, Lower Hutt, ne*t Friday. I Sioka.
