Something to Work Out.
From an old work on Short Whist published in 1866 we take a problem which may help to pass an hour or two away for the members of our Chess and Draughts Club. The game was actually played in Vienna in the year above mentioned and at double dummy. Its story runs thus :— -The mo.U celebrated player in Vienna had to play the hands Nos. 1 and 8 ; as soon as the cards were exposed, he exclaimed, "Why I shall make all thirteen tricks." This appeared impossible to the by atanders, for, although his hands were, between them of commanding strength, still his adversary's hand?, between them, held «v«ry suit guarded except the trump. Large bets were mado against the accomplishment of the feat, which was, however, performed ; and it became evident that, if hands 1 and 3 are rightly played, hands 2 ' and 4 are utterly helpless, and in spite of guarded suits must lose all thirteen tricks.
Nos. 1 and 3 and Nos. 2 and 4 are partners.
Clubs are trumps. No. 1 leads and makes all thirteen tricks.
