The Hon. Dr. Pollen.
The Hon. Dr Pollen died at Avondale on Monday morning. Dr Pollen has been a public man in New Zealand for nearly 40 years. The deceased gentleman received* his training as a medical man in the Old Country, and came to Auckland in 1889 as one of the earliest settlers in that district. There he entered tho Civil Service, and rose to high and responsible office, being ultimately appointed a member of the Legislative Council while Auckland was still the seat of Government. From July, 1861, to August. 1862, he was a member of the second Fox Ministry, without portfolio; and again he waa a member of the second Stafford Government, from Jane, 1868, to June, 1869. Dr Pollen was Premier and Colonial Secretary from July, 1875, to Fabruary, 1876, when he took office under Sir Julius Yogel as Colonial Secretary. This portfolio he continued to hold in the succeeding Atkinson Government, together with that of Native Minister, until Octoter, 1877, when he retired with hip colleagues. TSince then Di* Pollen has held no responsible office, but he has ever been one of the most active members of the Legislative
Council in the criticising of the measures and administration of one Government after another— in fact, the most earnest and outspoken member of that venerable body. Deceased leaves two sona - one of whom, Mr Hugh Pollen, is Undersecretary in the Colonial Secretary's Department, and Mr Charles Pollen, surveyor, of Auckland — and also several daughters.
