The Dews that a rich discovery of gold has been made in Trinidad comes to us by way of New York. Ir need not be surprising if it is remem bered that this West Indian island lies but a short way off the northern coast of Venezuela, the nearest coast b Ang distant only seven miles, who*e gold bearing area is yet a bonn (,f discussion betwt-eu Great Britain and that Republic of >outh America. Trinidad is the most Routherly of th< W^st India islands and the Govern ment is vested in a Governor and Executive Council, and a Legislative Council, all of whom are nominated by the Crown. The island is about 55 miles in length and 40 in breadth. The chief town and port of entry 11 Port of Spain." is one of the finest towns in tha West Indies and con tains 88,000 inhabitants. One of the mpst remarkable objects in the island is the pitch lake of over 100 acre 3in extent, and containing un apparently inexhauaibls supply.
