Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, MAY 7, 1896. A Loan.

On Monday a councillor uttered a cry for a loan. When money is scarce the idea of outside caßh ooming into a district is pleasing, but unfortunately our councillors have been blind to the fact that the time they want a loan is just the time they are not likely to get the sanction of the ratepayers for one. The need represents also the reason of its being unattainable. No one can accuse us of not wanting a loan as we have done our best, " many a time and oft," to get councillors up to the point to test the feeling of the ratepayers on this subject, but times being good no immediate reason pressed them into action. So we have gone on from year to year and most likely shall so continue. We regret to say that we hold with the

Mayor that just now is not the aaason to talk about loans, b^t when the season does come we fear the Mayor will not agree to one. As we hold these opinions it hardly seems of use to discuss the matter further, though if ratepayers do desire a loan we should be glad to give publicity to their views. Councillors failing to obtain outside money for expenditure in the town can, by the exercise of some forthought take care that none is lost to the town by local cash being sent away to places far removed. This holds good both for goods and for labour and the question is one so easy to apply that "he who runs may read," and We trust they will like the immortal Cuttle, when found " make a note of."
