Prohibited Persons.
The substantial fine which the Stipendiary Magistrate imposed on the prohibited person who was proved to have been drunk at the Shannon races, ia very satisfactory. We are sorry for the man> for when kept away from liquor be is a good and hard-worker, and the fine £5 and costs 15s, will be a serious call upon his finances. An example was needed and it fell to this man's lot to be offered up as one, but he richly deserved it as by his action he brought the publican into much trouble. The publican was charged with supplying the prohibited person with drink, and though he must have got the drink on the racecourse and from the booth, yet no evidence was given that tne publican or bis servants served the liquor, and that stupid friends (?) obtained the liquor and handed it to the prohibited person. The publican's case was dismissed and had it not been we do not know what publicans would have done as they would apparently have been answerable for every man who was drunk near their premises. The prohibited person, something of a bush lawyer, thought he could get a " day out " because though he knew, so be said, he was prohibited from getting liqnor at the two hotels in Shannon he thought he might on the racecourse. He is now a wiser man. It will b.e as well if all who worry the trade by these prohibition orders will take this case into their very earnest consideration.
