THE LAWS DELAY.
TO THK EDITOR OF THE MANAWATU HEBAID. Sib, — The omission of the words "if untrue " in my letter which you published laßt Thursday, somewhat obscured my meaning. I wished to say, that if Mr Baker's charges against Constable Gillespie are untrue, the public ought to be assured of this without delay. You fay that the S.M. has not had time to go on with the inquiry. Am Ito understand then that an inquiry into a flaxinM dispute which engaged the attention of the Court last Saturday, is considered of greater importance than an inquiry affecting the character of an officer of long standing who has hitherto been held in great respect. It seems to me an intolerable injustice both to Constable Gillespie and to the public that the inquiry should have been allowed to stand over so long. Let suitors wait until Constable Gillespie is either condemned or cleared. I am, drc, Cms.
