THE LAWS DELAY.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE MANAWATTJ HERALD

•"Oir, — The inquiry into Mr S. M. Bißff's charges against Constable Gillespie is a good illustration of the above proverbial expression. In your issue of February 18th you reported that on January 14th Mr Baker wrote to the Premier a long letter, parts of which you set out, from which it appeared that Mr Baker charged the Constable with extortion and gross misconduct in performing hi 3 duties as bailiff of the Magistrate's Court. Tiu charges were so serious in their character that not a day should have been lost in investigating them, for, if true tha Constable ought not to bo occupying the present position. On the other hand, the public ought to be assured of this without delay. You reported that the S.M. held a Court on February 15th to inquire into the charges, and yet although it is now over two months since that date, no decision so far as I am aware has been announced. Can you explain the cause of the delay ? The delay is certainly very prejudicial to the interests of the public and to the character of the Constable. I am, &c,

Civis. [The inquiry was adjourned to another date but even then the Magistrate was too busy to hear it. We do not know when the ease will again come on for hearing. Ed. M.H.]
