Butter and Cheese.
• Messrs W. Weddel and Co., London, in their weekly market report, dated 6th March, state :— jj+ Butter. — The better demand for colonial batter which was felt at the end of last week did not continue, ftßd itftfr lifiW hftft been *low> The
week closes with a dearth of buyers, and for best factory brands- sales cannot be made, except at reductions on last week's figures to. the extent of 2s to 4s per cwt. Choicest Victorian fetches from 96s to 102, the latter figure being realised in very rare cases, while best factory ranges from 90s to 945. The Orient has landed her butter in good condition so far as refrigeration is concerned, but the quality is far from satisfactory. The drought in Australia is doubtless .to blame for the inferior quality of many well-known factories as compared with last year. There is a peculiar flavour attaching to many brands, which looks as if the cows had been fed on artificial or unusual food. The Danish Committee have reduced the Copenhagen quotation by three kroner, and prices now ruling are 993 to 103s for finest I factory, and 104s to 109s for choio* est. Tht fall in Danish ought not to affect the price of colonial, as the prices of the two kinds are so very far apart, and as in a fortnight the arrivals from Australia will not exceed 100 tons a week. Cheese. — The demand for Canadian continues much the same as last week. This is rather surprising, considering that the stocks in London are not more than about three weeks' consumption. More business has been done in this cheese with 40a to 43s per cwt., buyers preferring these to New Zealand's, even wheu they have to pay Is more for Canadians. New Zealand's are selling at 38s to 41s per cwt;., which is Gs lower than last year. The report quotes the following prices for New Zealand produce : — Butter, choicest factory, 96s to 102s ; best factory, 90s to 94s ; secondary, 80s to 90s. Cheese, 40s to 445.
