At the last meeting of the Horowhenua County Council on Monday Mr Davies Sropoßed that the office be moved from itaki to Levin. After a discussion the motion was lost by one vote. Mr Mayo, the Government fruit expert, visited Foxton on Tuesday and had a look I around some of the orchards. ! We notice that Mr John Spelman has a fair show of vehioles requiring repairs grouped around his smithy in the Mainstreet. Timber is slowly and surely acoumulat* ing on the ground of the Primitive Metho" dist Church for building a Sunday schoolWe notice that a late English paper repeats the story of Bishop Julius having laid the topmost briok of his restored Cathedral spire. The same paper tells how Bishop Juluis at a town visited during a recent tour addressed the congregation : — " I never saw so much bad coin in all my life. To offer to the Church — the cause of God — money that the baker or the butcher would not accept shocks me. The man ! who would do that wants the grace of God very badly— w tbr.ee tnonUifji

The flow rises 8 feet above the 6-inch pipe. Mr R. W. Hanbury> Financial Secretary to the Treasury, stated, in replying to Mr J. Henniker Heaton, M.P. for Canterbury, that it was impossible to force Imperial penny postage down the throats of the colonies. The proposal, he declared, would involve universal penny postage, and the result would be that the losses on the foreign and colonial services would be increased to £275,000 per annum. Miss Ecolesfleld was granted three months' leave of absence from Carnarvon School. It is said that King Alexander of Servia is to marry the Princess Helene, the third daughter of the Prince of Montenegro. She is twenty-three years old and the young king is three and a half years younger. She is famous for her beauty throughout the Principality. She is dark, vivacious and accomplished. She has a soft voice, a gentle manner, and a delightful .smile. ! The Princess inherited her beauty from her i mother, the daughter of the Senator Petar Vokotie. An interesting incident in the reign of Queen Victoria occurs this year, in the faot that, if she survives, her's will be the longest veign of any Sovereign within the British Isles. George 111 reigned 59 years 96 days. Queen Victoria began to reign on June 20th, 183?. In her case 59 years 96 daya will expire on September 24th, 1896. "Automobile" cabs have promptly worked their way in Paris. A company has aotually received permission from the au thorities to run 100 of these cabs at the fare of the ordinary cabs and under the same regulations, with full privilege to take their "stand" at most of the regular cabstands. If succesful, the company is ready to increase the number of its new-fashioned conveyances. Next Court day at Foxton will likely be a heavy one. A case under the totalisator clauses of the Gaming Act is likely to be brought under the notice of the Stipendiary Magistrate. If it does get before the Court it will doubtless be most interesting. Constable Gillespie having got information that the racing mare Naughty Girl, whioh it will be remembered was taken from the owner's stables at Poroutawhao, had been traced to Taupo, he a warrant yesterday for the apprehension of the man in whose custody the mare was. This person turns out to be a man for some time in the employ of Mr McDonald at Poroutawhao, known as John Young alias Sanders. The accused will be remanded from Taupo to Palmerston North. Mr Pirani, our representative on the Education Board, reported that he had ordered the fencing material required for the Foxton School, and suggested that the Board's carpenter should be sent down to oarry out small repairs, paint the inside of the school, and to report on necessary alterations to the teacher's residence. — Mr Pirani's suggestions were adopted. This is satisfactory. Another mystery. Mr Dunlop has reported to the police having found a swag and a bottle of poison at Kereru. The owner being missing it is surmised that he has suicided, but as the poison still remains behind most probably he has not. At present the question is in doubt. The Education Board has agreed to supply the Foxton School with two dozen dual desks.
