Public Meeting.

« In accordance with the advertisement in Saturday's issue of this paper a public meeting was held at Whyte's Hotel Sample-room last night. His Worship the Mayor took the chair and introduced Mr Howan. Mr Howan said he called the meeting to show plans of a steam launch. He asserted such a launch was needed. He was sure a good deal of trade could be done with a better boat than he had now. He desired their help, and would like to get £200. It had been said in thß Manawatu Herald that he only required £150 and if he could not obtain the £200 he would make up the difference. The traffic manager of the railway had said he would put on railway excursions if a steamer could be had to take pas* sengers to the beach. He wanted the money only for 12 months free of interest, after that he would pay interest on what was not paid. He was willing that the lenders should choose 3 trustees to hold the money and the boat as security. He believed the launch would be the means of introducing a number of people into the district. After a little discussion the following resolution was * Proposed by Mr Thynne, seconded by Mr Stansell, •• That this meeting approves of the proposals of Mr S. Howan and will do its best to assist him, and that the Messrs Hennessy, Thynne and Osborne be appointed a committee to canvass for assistance," and on being put to the meeting was carried unanimously. Mr Howan proposed the usual vote of thanks to the chair and also one to Mr Stansell for the free use of the Sample room.
