Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, APRIL 11, 1896. Yet a Little Longer.
» ■ ■ We are a long suffering people who pufc lords over our heads simply to be laughed afc by them. To every re- • quest made by the electors of this district the Government have ignored, unfortunately, nofc simply, but by assertions whicb have in their turn been forgotten, or to use political language, recorded "to be kept steadily in view " until the general election is close afc hand. In the beginning of November the Premier {
promised mosfc faithfully to send what he was pleased to term an expert up to the district to report on the proposals of fche company that offered to construct a railway between Levin and Greatford. We know that the «« expert " Mr McKerrow as it turned oufc, and a very good expert to', never got bere until the Hth March. He told the meeting in the library that he hoped to be able to have his report sebfc to the Government in eight or nine days, but when asked when the Government would announce his decision, he said, very truly, h,e could nofc tell, and nofc only he, bufc no one here can tell. Supposing Mr McKerrow succeeded in getting in his report in nine days, the Government should have had it on the 29rd March and surely our representative, Mr J. G. Wilson, or our Mayor, or some other distinguished resident might have been notified of the contents of the report and the determination of the Government by now. We do nofc like to characterise the action of the Government in direct language as it might be thought too forcible for ears polite, but when the Government were aware, even before November, that time was a very great question to the company, who had some £250,000 locked up awaiting a decision to their proposals, and up to now have not given them a reply, is certainly treating the company and settlers with the greatest discourtesy. The question still is, when shall we get the reply ?
