- ♦ Four machine guns from H.M.S. St. George, the flagship at the Cape, are being sent to Buluwayo for the defence of that position against the Matabele. Lieutenant Maurice Gifford haa been wounded. He has twioe repulsed the Matabele. It is estimated that 6500 women and children are seeking shelter in the laager at Buluwayo, within 15 miles of which the rebels are massing in large numbers. Lieutenant Gifford has again inflicted defeat on the Matabeles, witb the loss of only two killed and three wounded. The natives swarmed all round and attempted to rush the laager, but were beaten off. They lost at least 100 men. Mr Rhodes is suffering from fever at Fort Salisbury. Buluwayo is reported to be Bhort of rifles. The rebels have captured 60* ) head of cattle.
