Herr Eruger, in the course of an interview, said he had great hopes of of being able to effect a satisfactory settlement of the Transvaal difficulty though the position at present was involved. The Hollanders are bitterly hostile to the visit. Mr Chamberlain now finds that the Governor's assent to the Bill passed by the Maltese Legislature imposing a duty on frozen meat is subject to the Royal assent, and he is making enquiries as to whether the proposed amendments will meet the objections raised to the measure by the Australian Agents-General. An offer is reported to have been made to the claim of the former. Government for the outrage committed on British police by Venezuelans some 15 months ago, and Venezuela will pay an indemnity for the out rage if the amount claimed is reduced to £1000.
