Manakau.

♦ (from our own correspondent.) The Manakau school picnic is always looked upon as. one of the pleasant fixtures of the year. Great pains are taken to make it a pleasant outing for young and old, and it was this year if possible more successful than usual. The day was beautifully fine and the population turned out in a body to have a good day's amusement. The pionic was held in Mr Brown's paddock, and all day long the various games usual at' picnics were indulged in by the " big, young people," while the smaller fry were kept busy running races, etc., for prizes. There 'was a plentiful supply of tea and eatables for young and old. The futf was kept going till darkness made it necessary to disperse. Hearty cheers were given for Mr and Mrs Bethune and the teachers. Some of the more energetic wound up with a dance in the hail. Our cricketers have again sue ceeded in winning Mr J. G. Wilson's* shield. This is the third time they have succeeded in coming out first. There is still a match to play with Levin, but which ever way the game goes it cannot affect the final result. The dry weather is beginning to have a bad effect upon the grass in the neighbourhood, and if we do not soon get rain there will be a scarcity of feed before winter sets in. At the school picnic a little girl about three years of age fell off a seat and broke her arm. Dr Mason, of Otaki, set the injured limb, and did all that was possible for the little patient.
