The Picnic.
Yesterday morning a big train left Foxton filled with children, young and old, bent on a holiday at the far end of the Manawutu George. The day was all that could be desired, calm and warm bufc not too hot, aud the George looked at its best. About 800 tickets were sold at I Foxton, and at Carnarvon, Bainesse | and Oroua Bridge further additions were made which must have brought ' the total number of passengers to 870. j •* the train only stopped at Palmerston and then at the picnicing place a feer leaving tho Oroua Bridgp, and excellent time was kept both going und returning. The reserve at the bridge end of the Gorg? is an almost ideal spot for picnics, there being nice grass, a good river beach, the lovely view both of the Gorge and the continuation of the hills, the awift flowing river in which to bathe or paddle, j and th?n a lot of nutivo bush in I -i*j4jph to seek shelter from the sun. | Also along the Gorge road, on the j elopes above the roadway thera ure admirable spots fur little camps. We think we are entitled to say that all enjoyed their day out. About an hour before laaving Mr Rhodes, who with much tboughtfulness had «d a tin of lollies, had many les for the joungsters. A . , ..ports " also got some runs f r their money between the boys ( aid girls. Mr Stewart, the head-
j. master, and a'l the teachers accomj padied , the expedition and kitidly i assisted in tlie children hafridg a j pleasant driy. Bathing ih the river \sas a senaa--3 tion appreciated by the males, and j gathering ferns was taken np by the r ladies and youngsters. , } We have to thank Mr Imrie and B the railway officials for the coartej ousness and attention to the party.
