As compared with the January prices» all medium» inferior and merino wool at the present series of sales shows an increase of fully 6 per cent ; lambs and best Geelong are unchanged ; and crossbreds are very firm at Jd higher. German representatives are the chief operators^ Americans doing nothing. Sheepskins are in keen demand, and merinos have advanced Jd, croasbreds £d. The enormous strength of the Russian Pacific squadron is attracting general attention. The Cairo correspondent of The Times says the recent discussion of the evacuation of Egypt by the British has caused excitement among the natives, and elicited a strong expression of attachment to British rule. The English wheat market is dull, the Continental shows a little improvement, and the American is unchanged. At the sales on 7th instant, '6so casks of tallow were offered, of which 575 were sold medium mutton at 2lz 3d, medium beef at 19^ 9J. The House of Commons has approved of Mr Goschen's naval programme by 201 votes to 45. Mr Goschen said the Government were already able to man every possible ship with the help cf 11,000 of the reserves. The Associated Chambers of Commerce have passed a resolution thanking Mr Chamberlain for the steps he has taken to develop colonial trade, and informing him that his efforts in this direction are highly appreciated in commercial circles. The Times thinks it would be better for the colonies to improve the frozen meat trade than to seek to establish the live stock traffic. London and Berlin financiers will take the Chinese loan of sixteen millions at 5 per cent.
