Socialists v. Workers.
From France we learn a story which can be read with interest here. The gift of 100,000 fr. to the Carmauz strikers for the purpose of founding a glass faotory on Socialist principles, has proved a Trojan horse for the Socialist Deputies. For months they fought over the question whether the profits obtained from the new enterprise were to be gleaned by the Carmaux workmen, or were to be devoted to the Socialist propaganda. This question wa9 at last decided in favour of the Socialist propaganda, and then there arose a conflict over the site of the new factory, whether it should be at Carmaux or at Albi. The arbitrators to whom the matter was referred, decided in favour of the latter place, but the Carmaux workmen resolutely refused to abide by the decision of the arbitrators. At a public meeting, which took place at Carmaux, the Socialist Deputies were covered with inyicbives, the names of the proprietors of the Carmaux works, were mentioned with enthusiasm, and now the popularity of Sooialist Deputies at Carmaux has gone for ever.
