The Constantinople correspondent of the Times states that the SuHan of Turkey has invited Great Britain to regulate the situation in Egypt with a suzerain power as a basis, and guarantees the security of the passage to India. Mr G. N. Curzon, Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, stated in the House of Commons, in reply to a question, that Bussia's pledge not to occupy Corea was binding. A steamer is aground in the Suez Canal, and traffic is bsing interrupted. Both the outward and homeward mails are blocked. The Boards of Conciliation Bill has passed its second reading in the House of Commons. Mr Ritchie, President of the Board of Trade, has introduced a Bill for tho construction of light railways, on which £1,000,000 is to be expended to assist poor districts. The Bill introduced by Mr W. H. Long, President of the Board of Agriculture, with regard to the cattle trade, proposes to render permanent existing rules to restrict the importation of cattle from countries where it is known that disease prevails, and to abolish the provision by which the matter is left to the discretion of the Minister. The Government has decided to relieve the payment of rateß on farming lands to the extent of £2,000,---00U annually. Mr Evans, Liberal, has been returned by a majority of 85 voted for one of the seats for Southampton, rendered vacant by the disqualification of Mr T. Chamberlayne, Conservative, returned at the general election* Mr John Morley, ex-Chief Secretary for Ireland, has been returned for Mont rose Burghs by a majority of 1993, to fill the vacancy brought about by the resignation of Mr J. S. Will, Q.O. Sir John Millais has been unanimously elected President of the Royal Academy in succession to the late Lord Leighton. The appeal in the case of Jabez Balfour has been dismissed. New Zealand long berried wheat, nominal ; South Australian ditto, weaker, 29s 9d ; Victorian, quiet, 29s 9d. Quotations for New Zealand frozen meat and hemp are unchanged. The buttermarket is dull. Colonial is quoted at 94s to 98s per cwt. Danish has advanoed four kroner.
