The elephant fish is " very much like a whale " except ss to size. The correct name is Callorhynchus antarticus, and is so called on account of its prolongation of the snopt, which has a peculiar proboscis-like appendage, serving as a prehensile organ, in plainer language its nose is formed in the shape of a hook by means of which it could place itself on a rail and hang itself out to dry, but, of course, it does not. It is an inhabitant of the southern Pacific and the vicinity ot the Cape of Good Hope, [ and it is sometimes eaten.
