A National Union actually wants equality be tween Dutch and British 1 At present it exists not, arid if President Kruger gets his way it will not be for some time. The grand old man of the Transvaal is quietly importing Maxim guns which he reckons worth more than other maxims wise or ancient. Our readers will remember how this South African Republic lies, to the North east of the Cape Colony, with the Orange Free State between them. It was founded sometime between 1840 and 1845 by Dutch farmers from the Cape Colony, and acknowledged as a Re« public by the English, but second thoughts suggested annexing it in 1877, when the British troops re* ceived a series of repulses afc the hands of the Boers. The result ot the war being the retrocession of the State to the Republic. In the boundaries He the towns of Johannesberg, Pochefatroom, Pretoria and Klerksdorp.
