Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, DEC. 28. 1895. Ignored.
To be successful in approaching the present Government on any subject it appears imperative t.hat the parties must be the humble and obedient followers of Ministers, otherwise no. good will be obtained. It is now some months since the inhabitants of Fox ton and Sandon and Carnarvon petitioned the Government to purchase the estates belonging to the Bank of New Zealand Assets Company at Moutoa and Carnarvon. The Government promised to send up Mr McKerrow to report on the properties and to abide by his opinion. Mr McKerrow advised the purchase of Carnarvon but not of Moutoa. We hold that the Moutoa estate can be advantageously subdivided but that is not now \o the point. We have it on record that a large number of people wanted to obtain a portion of the
Carnarvon estate and the Government expert recommended its purchase, but up to now no further effort has been made by the Government to give effect tD their promises, is to be deplored as it has caused very great disappointment, as the estate, instead of being made available for small settlers on eaay terms, has been sold by the Assets Company to three large capitalists, leaving but a paltry lew acres still for Bale. All this has been done by the company since the public statement by the Government that they would secure the property if Mr McKerrow advised them* In this matter there has been a distinct want of good faith on the part of the Ministry. We have to further complain on the studied delay of the Premier in appointing the expert who is to report on the LevinGreatford railway. The delay we regret to say appears to have been intentional and has been adopted to secure the collapse of the scheme. The Premier was informed that the English capitalists were anxious for an early answer to their proposals, and from the date the Governmsnt were first approaohed by the representatives of these capitalists up to to day, months have gone bye. Before the end of the coming year a general election will take place and voters will be urged to support those candidates who will vote as the Government bid them, like the majority of the Liberal Party. We Urge our readers to recall these incidents of studied neglect shown by the Go* vernment to this district when votes can be of use, and of many other cases of neglect we do hot care to recall just now. If they do they will not vote to retain in power a Government which directs the exercise of its power only to assist those dis* tricts it can be sure will return a servile follower of theirs. The good of the district, the advancement of the colony, appear to be only of secondary consideration with them. This is Liberalism !
