Lord Salisbury, replying to the demand for arbitration on the Venezuela boundary question, states that the United States CjpYerament taki
an extreme view of the Monroe doctrine. The English press is amazed at President Cleveland's conduct. The Times says that no nation wich any self-respect can concede his demands. The Government will not accept less than the territory delimited by the Sehomburgk decision, and the work of such a commission as is suggested would be valuelesg. A Daily News correspondent says it 13 reported that the President's Message regarding Venezuela 13 merely a political manoeuvre designed to secure the success of the Democratic Party in the next Presidential campaign. The Radical press expresses confidence in Lord Salisbury's ability to deal satisfactorily with the dispute.
