Foxton Borough Council.
The statuory meeting for the installation ol the Mayor was held at the Library buildings yesterday at noon. Present — Crs Westwood, Walsh, Osborne, Border, Bradoock and Hennessy. The Clerk took the chair and read the letter from the Returning Officer notifying the election of Mr George Nye as Mayor. Mr Nye then made and signed the usual declaration. The Clerk then said it gave him great pleasure in asking Mr Nye the Mayor to take the chair once again. He had always worked pleasantly with him and he believed Mr Nye would work well with the Council. Mr Nye said in taking the chair he had great pleasure in returning thanks to the Burgesses for returning him as Mayor. He believed they would work amicably together. He moved that a vote of thanks to the retiring Mayor, Mr T. P. Williams, be given to him for Mb services daring the past year. The resolution was seconded by Cr Border and carried unanimously. Cr Bradcock desired to move the resolution that this . Council present our late Mayor . the sum of ten pounds for his past services as Mayor. • This was ruled out of order at this meeting and will be taken as a notice of motion for the next meeting. The following tenders were opened :— For collecting the dog tax. A letter was read from Constable Gilleßpie stating ths police were allowed to collect the dog tax. The only tender was that of P. Guerin at 9d per dog. The Mayor moved and Or Border seconded, That Constable Gilleapie be appointed dog tax collector for one year at one shilling a dog. The Mayor said he believed the Borough would be a considerable gainer by having Constable Gillespie collector. He fenew many dogs were not registered and it was not fail* to those who did pay the tax. He believed the Council would bt in pocket by £10 or £1 2. Cr Westwood was in favour of the best way of getting in the money but he was not in favour of the motion. He believed there were very few _ dogs in the place not registered. * Or O»borne wanted to know what
was the greatest number of dog* registered in. one year ? ; Cr Border seconded the resolution becauca if there was a dog in any bole or corner Constable Gillispit would be sure to find him out. ' "\, Cr Bradcock thought Oonstabtd Gillespie had. enough to do and Mr Guerin he thought had done his work well. . The Mayor said it had been proved that the Council had no check on the collector. It had to depend on " r his honesty. He wanted all the dogs in the Borough registered. Cr Westwood moved the following as an amendment, That the tenders for collecting the dog tax be held over till next general meeting and that the late tax-gatherer be asked to hand in all papers and books relating to the matter and that the names of all defaulters be also handed in. This was seconded by Mr Osborne. Mr Border thought it waff a very fair amendment. The amendment was carried. . Tenders for lighting were opened.* P. Guerin, £28 ; J. McGilf, £38 12s. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Border, .That P. Gueriri'a tender be accepted for lighting for one year for the sum of £28.-— Carried. \ Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Westwood, That the daymen be paid progress payment of £5 each to be paid on Tuesday the 24th December and that the holidays be. Xmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.- Carried. Proposed by Or "Westwood, se» conded by Cr Walsh, That the next general meeting.be held on Friday 27 ih inst. at 7.80 p,na.— Carried.
