These are our storekeepers ; they are now showmen for old Father Cflfistmas. The chimnies in town are far too small for that worthy old character getting down them, loaded as he is always represented to be by the popular pictures. Besides, there is another thing to be considered, and that is how was Father Christmas to get to the many rooms which have no chimnies ? For these, and many other reasons, our storekeepers have laid in a marvellous assortment .'-■• of pretty goods, and curious toys. Our tradesmen bave, however, kept this point distinctly in view and have marked their goods in accordance -With the times. The display is 'better this year than haa ever been and a goodtrade is being done day by day, .though Christmas is yet some days distant. We have already issued seme "insets" of the goods on sale by our advertisers, and Will be doing so again and again until all have used this opportunity" of bringing the show before our readers and the publio generally. Messrs Weßtwood & Co. have made *more particular point in cutlery and plated goods. One novelty is a bread- knife fashioned after the likeness of a lightning hay-knife. Glassware, cards, &c, and other nicknacks are also on hand. Messrs Hennessy & Co. have toys in profusion, a very large lot of glass and chinaware, and certain specialties set out in newly-erected glass show cases. * Mr Rhodes made a hit by the introduction of a lot of minature, old fashioned, brown china, he has, of Course, all the other fancy lines. Mr Tos has more particularly , shown 'Xmas cards', Japanese ware and glass ornaments. Mr Fraser, the proprietor of the Book and Toy Shop, has "& heavy stock of most interesting and handsomely bound literature, and a thouEglj^and one fancy articles which Stationers make their own speciality. The drapers. They too have left nothing undone to please their customers. " Ribbons and laces to set off the faces, of sweethearts and wives " are to be found at both Loveday Bros, and Mr Osborne's. An effort has been made, and we trust the result will be satisfactory. No one should be so unpatriotic te order from Wellington that which tbs^rcan get as good and as cheap here.
