Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, DEC. 10, 1895
With this iesue Mr Alf Eraser, our local bookseller, takes a novel way of wishing our readers a Merry 'Xmas aud a Happy New Year. The idea is a very pleasing one, and is bound to be appreciated. The jury disagreed in the Harper case and were discharged. A new trial has been granted.by the judge, and a change of venue ha 3 been made to Wellington. It is good news to learn that the barque Weaihersfield arrived '■\n Wellington on Saturday morning. Thus saith an authority — Those who possess large gardens and require quantities of bloom for cutting will find the single Dahlia a very valuable acquisition. We thank Messrs Westwood & Co., the agents for the-Nonh Queensland Fire and Marine Insurance Company for an almanac for next year. Farmers in the Wairarapa district consider that the late heavy rains will rust the grain of the coming season, whilst shearing operations are greatly impeded through the same cause. A newspaper supporting the Government gets off this kind of praise : — "A Fitzherbert settler who applied for a loan of £300 from the Advances to Settlers Department and received it promptly, is well satisfied i with the working of the department." A , man who gets all he wants and at once is generally well satisfied. What was he expected to be ? It is those who cannot get the loans applied for, though the s?curity is good, who are dissatisfied with the work- ! ing of the department. , Messrs Gorton nnd Son hold a horße sale to-morrow at Feilding. Messrs Abraham & Williams hold etock sales at Palmeiston on Thursday and Ooly- , toa on Tne»clfty< '
Mr Edward Howe had the misfortuad td slip on the deck of his steamer Moutoa and fell breaking two of his ribs, which laid him lip fdr a time. He is about again now ileai'ly all right. Paris pays £36 a year for winding up the clocks ia the Town Hall. Another item is peculiar, that of £20 for expenses incurred in li'ansporting and burying human remains found in excavations. The (jrovernment intend to change the name of the town now known as Palmerston North. Many new names have been Suggested but none have satisfied our neighbours, they need a high-sounding name and one distinctive of the borough. Would " Woolloomooloo " do ? The name (o's) much, and Palmerston North owes nmch. Yesterday Mr Strang's team of three horses ran away with the empty dray from the railway yard and navigated many corners safely before they were brought up to a stand on the Moutoa-road. Nothing was hurt. Mr Campbell was in charge. There is some by-law in town about looked wheels but prqbably nothing will be said about it. . A crayfish canning factory has just been started at Akaroa with every prospect of it proving a success. Large supplies have already been guaranteed by the local fishermen. Tenders are invited by the Eev. G. Aitkens for the erection of a church at Levin. The school concert is fixed for the 19th December. Messrs Laery and Co., Limited, report of Friday's wool sale : — We offered a well-as-sorted catalogue representing 600 bales. It is stated, says the Manawatu Times, that litigation will arise between the holders of the privileges and the Otaki Maori Racing Club owing to the late races being postponed. Hansard, up to 28th October, is to hand. Mr Alf Fraser has a change advertisement in to-day's issue well worth reading. Economy b"ing studied, Mr Fraser reckons he should get a call. Messrs Loveday Bros, have now opened up all the latest novelties. Their new advertisement deserves every atteiitidn.
