Wool Sales.
The Loan and Mercantile Agency Company report :— The first series of local sales opened to a larger attendance of buyers than usual. For the better quality wools the bidding was spirited, though for faulty descriptions the market lacked animation. Doubtless the cable received from London, advising a drop in the market, had the effect of making buyers cautious in operating freely. The total quantity offered was 1900 bales, ot which our catalogued comprised 754. On the whole prices secured show an average advance of 10 per cent as compared with the values ruling at the the opening sales of last season. For bright lustrous wools, in good condition, the advance was equal to 15 per cent. Generally, the result of the Company's Bale may be considered satisfactory, as in a large number of instances we secured advances on owners reserves. Out of 180 lots offered we quitted 130 lots under the hammer, and afterwards disposed of several lines privately. The prices ranged — For good greasy crossbred, from 7£ to 9d ; medium and inferior, s£d to 7£d ; bellies, pieces and dead wool, 3d to s£d ; locks, l£d to 4Jd.
