At the wool sales there was a large attendance from all centres, and good competition. Continental buyers operating freely. Five per cent, covers the decline in all medium and better greasies. There was strong competition for good greasy merinos at from par to 5 per cent decline. Crossbreds generally are 5 per cent, and faultier, especially second quality, 7£ per cent cheaper. The commander of the Venezulan forces protested against Maxim guns being placed on the frontier of British Guiana. The British authorities replied that they were placed there foc-w defence purposes, and not as an act-' of aggression. Jabez Balfour has been convicted on the charge of dividing, with Wright, the contractor, ' -£20,000 commission on the construction of the Whitehall Court. Sentence has been deferred. It is expected that the British Budget will show a surplus of £6,000,000.
