To-day is St. Andrews' Day. For some good reason the banks eloße, probably to permit their clerks to suitably celebrate the day in the true Scottish fashion. The Borough Council meet on Monday evening. The N. Z. L. and M A. The Premier of Western Australia, speaking at Coolgardie, Baid the Government intended to thoroughly test the goldfields for artesian water, and if it were not obtainable in sufficient quantities, he fa- j voured bringing it from the seaboard. Such a scheme, he said, would supply the entire fields at a cost of £6,000,000 sterling, bnt the Government would not stop at so large an expenditure if they saw that it was really required. Mr Doherty has completed his contract for blacksoiling the cuttings on No. 6 Line, j and he appears to have carried out his work in a satisfactory manner. We would draw the Council's attention to the fact that some of the embankments need some black-soil to cover the raw sand, otherwise the work just finished will soon be spoilt. The Wellington Board schools break up for the holidays on the 20th proximo. Oats are hardening, Wellington quotations being prime short 2s 6d to 2s 7d, seed Tartarians 2s 6d to 2s 9d per bushel. It is needless to say the continual showery weather has retarded all shearing operations. The Moutoa Estate will be finished shearing on Monday if the weather is fine. To mark the initiation of the new. direct produce service, the Victorian Government ' has sent 500 carcases of mutton by the Gulf of Siam to the Mayor of Manchester, to be distributed among the poor of that city. To those in search of such like delicacies for the hot season, we quote mutton birds in casks in Wellington at fourpence half -penny a pound. Only just try them. The Minister of Lands has failed again in a dummy hunt. At Invercargill, after considering the evidence in the alleged dummyism case at Centre Hill, the Land Board came to the conclusion that there was not sufficient to prove that the applicant's declaration was made falsely.
