Tomato plants seem scarce, thus a hint how to get plants may be useful. It is nothing wrong, no suggestion to enter your neighbour's garden when he is absent and help yourself, but on the contrary, make a point i ! meeting your neighbour and get some cuttings from him. properly eared for th«Bf Will do equally well m rwUd plftQtl.
It is pethaps nobody's business to give the public accurate Information, at any rate on page 107 of the Dime-table for the N.Z. GovernmentKailways for November appears the following heading i— " Coach services : The following particulars of the principal coach-serviced from railway-stations are published for the benefit of the public." I However, this heading is continued " The j Railway Department is not responsible for these service*, and is not answerable for their fulfilment, or for correctness of the fares" So. far the Time-table, but they also appear to be easy or indifferent about the correctness of 'any of the statements they make, as this one-year-old notice is still given " From Kereru to Poxton, daily 10.30 a.m. Coach returns 6.30 a.m. Fares 5s single* 9s return*" It is about time the compiler of this Time-table had his attention drawn to these wonderful inaccuracies. Mr Byron Brown, the well-known auctioneer of Otaki, announces a great auction sale of Japanese goods and an assortment of dress stuffs and cutlery at the Public Hall on the sth and 6th of December. The Presbyterian Assembly at] Melbourne has received £12,000 as the result of Dr Paton's efforts in collecting on behalf of the New Hebrides mission. One of the most remarkable botanical achievements of this century has been obtained by Professor Emery E. Smith, of California, who, by experiments in crossfertilisation (says " Knowledge "), has succeeded in producing an entirely new violet, highly scented, and of great beauty. In size the flower oovers an American silver dollar. Its colour is a clear violet purple, which does not fade. The fragrance is ' very powerful. Good progress is being made with the repairs to the wharf and station buildings, and it was quite time they were seen to. The number of iron-bark piles now being driven clearly shows to what a fine point the risk of the wharf being demolished by some flood had been carried. The Defence Minister is about re-classi-fying the Police Force} and some radical change* may be expected. There is something wrong in the administration of the shearer's accommodation laws. Here we have been having all this wet weather and the Government, fond of old motherly meddling, have forgotten to advance on loan umbrellas, and have not directed the Inspectors to see that the shearers' blankets are properly aired before they turn in of a night. Why, bless me, these unfortunates may catch a bad cold owing to this callous indifference on the part of the Government. Railways are not tile only business concerns which cause lawsuits. From a cable 1 ' gram it appears that the original proprietors of the Londonderry mine have brought an action against Lord Fingall claiming the sum df £30,<k)d at present deposited in the Union Bonk. The Judge has allowed Lord Fingall 80 days within which to defend the action. Mr William Nye was good enough to bring us a portion of a variegated thistle, the first seen in Foxton. We explained what a first-class nuisance this tfgedis, and Mr Nye promptly undertook to grub this only root up. The report of the engineers on the rail* way line between Foxton and Palmerston will cause more interest being taken in the ride than heretofore. Please to note the report was made in January and this is November. The refldft says "In the Oroua Bridge many piles are half rotten, (only half— that at least is lucky. Ed. M.H.) and some of the beams rotten at heart ; it is patched and altered beyond recognition, and is to be built very soon." At least so it was thought in January, but eleven months after the piles are more rotten and the beams are ? what? for they cannot be more rotten than previously stated. We notice that as far back as January of this year Messrs Hales and Bell reported that the Foxton branch was in a very poor condition, and much in need of repairs. Part is begun in October ! Mr E. T. Gillon, the able editor of the Post, has gone on a sea voyage for the benefit of his health. We trust the change will do all that is desired. The thistle Mr W. Nye produced last week as a fine specimen of a plant that we do not want to see advance in this district is the milk or variegated thistle. It is described as being a very nndesnable plant in pasture lands. We believe the Horowhenua County Council enforces the mowing of these thistles prior to seeding. The Ruapehu is to take from Wellington upwards of 5000 carcases of mutton, 80 tons of cheese, 270 tons butler and 3000 bales wool. True, most true, but sad that it should be true. The Inspector of Hospitals in his report to Parliament says the Act of 1885 dealing with charitable aid " has also fixed in the popular mind, and especially in the minds of the least self-reliant of our people, the belief that they have a right to a living whether they work or not." The Midland Arbitration case to last three months 1 What a picnic for the arbitrators. No wonder our Premier does not at present enjoy the mention of railway companies. Wait, however, until he comes out on top and then it will be safe to approach him. Umbrellas are rarely used in Aden. Bain has fallen there only twice in 29 years. Previous to the last rain, which occurred in 1888, there was a period of dry weather which lasted 26 years.
