More Straining of the Act.
The victory gained by the Trade in rem >ving a publican's license from Manakau to Lnvin has prompted them to try, as we predicted they w >uld, to move other licenses no matter how strongly the residents might object. It was a great pity for the law abiding citizens tha> more notice was not taken of the first removal of a licence against the spirit if not the actual letter of the Licensing Act. Having won at L 'yin, the Trade has now assaulted N^wtown, and it is proposed to move a license from L tmbton Q'tay to ppremis s ai the c raer of D Jiiald McLean and Riddiford strwfcs, Newtown. Will they succeed ? That's the rub. Did anyone expect that success would have been obtained in the Levin attempt; when the ixjhj >rifcy on two or three occasion? r. fused the application ? V t persisent working was rewarded with success 1 Whoever is at the bottom of this transfer to Newtown has begun in good time as he has practically three nes b'fore he will be obliged to give in. Supposing the same tactics are pursued as were pursued in the Levin case the applicant has made his first attempt at the corner of Donald McLean street, failing to obtain the permission at the coming quarterly Licensing meeting he has to aband m that site, bat there is nothing to prevent his applying at the following meeting for a license for nest door to the first proposed premises, and failing this he cm make a final appeal at the next annual meeting. The Committee formed to oppose this attempt will j we trust be successful but they must never sleep until the next annual meeting in June has come and gone. Just thus are our Licensing laws under the creation and supervision of a Liberal Government.
