A Lady's Letter.
Wellington, Nov. 10, 1895. The Wellington, Agricultural Show which was held on Wednesday and Thursday, at the Show grounds, Petone, was .in eveiey way most successful,' in spite of the weather. On the morning of-the second day which is generally! termed the 11 People's Day," W' was steadily raining, and looked as if it meant to contittua so, but after noon the sun cape out brightly and with a light:>!&£&; everything .soon got tolerably dry and there was a very good attendance, over five thousand I hear. The jumping, driving and polo competitions were very interesting. The Earl and Countess of Glasgow were present, also the Ladies Augusta, Alice and Dorothy Boyle. Lady Glasgow wore a soft light sage green brocade gown trimmed with black satin, small black bonnet with jet and tips. The Ladies Boyle were dressed: in dark skirts and jackets, light blouses and sailor hats. Others I noticed were the Premier and his three daughters. Mr and Mrs Pratt, the latter wearing a black and white chegk tweed coat and skirt, blue waistcoat and small black feathered hat; Lady Hector, Mrs and the Misses Williams; Mrs D. Hewitt (Rangitikei) who wore handsome black brocade with jet trimming bonnet to correspond; Mrs Grace wore a very stylish gown of dark green and black mottled silk cr£pon, and pretty little gold bonnet trimmed with pink roses and forget xne-nots; Mrs W. E. Bid will wore a neat and becoming brown riding habit; Mrs Newman, goblin blue cloth tight fitting coat and skirt with -fevers of silk to match, pretty little toque to match; Miss Fitz herbert looked very nice in a white duck costume, and pretty white chip hat trimmed with small white tips and yellow roses; Mrs Levin, black serge skirt and jacket, blue checked waistcoat, and black felt hat with wings; Mrs Riddiford, black skirt and short cape, pale green silk blouse, and white boat shaped hat trimmed with blaok ribbons and quills; Mrs and the Misses Wilford, Mr and Mrs Elga (Wairarapa), Mrs and Miss Stowe, Mrs Abbott, Mr and Mrs H. H. Beetham, the Misses Barnett, Mr, Mrs and Miss Tolhurst, Mr and Mrs A. Crawford, Mr and Miss Pearce, the Misses Duncan, Bose, Johnston, Lee, Menzies, Cooper, Riddiford, Baker and many others too numerous to mention. During the afternoon Mrs E. J. Riddiford entertained a large number of her friends, including the Vice Regal Party, at afternoon tea, in a large marquee. It was originally intended to be a garden party but owing to the rain coining on in the morning, very few of the guests
ventured forth into the grounds, but those who did however, were well rewarded, for the gardens were looking lovely, especially the rose beds Afternoon tea, coffee and all sorts of dainties were to be had in the diningroom. Another attraction was a phonograph which waa in the ballroom and which Was kept going all the afternoon. Lord and Lady Glasgow received together and the latter wore a Very ham 1 une blue gown brocaded in a darker, shade, the bodice being trimmed with point <scru lace, a small 6cru lace bonnet ] trimmed with blue flowers ami gras3 i completed this elegant costuttie. ■ The Ladies Augusta and Alice i Boyle, who were helping to entertain, were dressed alike in light grey crepon skirts and blouse bodices of i pink and grey shot silk with deep 6cru lace collars, cream hats trimmed , with chiffon and short ribbon loops. Among the many guests Were Mrs i Seddon who wore a black costume and pretty black and yellow bonnet} the Misses Seddon also wore dark ' costumes; Lady Stout, black silk ■ trimmed with jet, small jet bonnet; Mrs Grace, very handsome black velvet gown with wide revers of cream brocade, ecru lace bonnet trimmed with flowers; Miss A. Grace wore a Btyhsh black satin skirt and pretty light striped silk blouse trimmed with ecru lace, white straw hat trimmed with black satin and quills; Mrs Brough wore a neat navy serge jacket and skirt, light blouse and sailor hat. Mesdames Travers, Williams, Harding, Goring, Cooper, Baldwin, Butler, Abbott, "Lady Douglas; and the Misses Cooper, Williams, Halse, Tuckey, Gore, Johnston, Barclay, Dransfield, Izard, Brandon, Harding, Gibson and many others. The Amateur Athletic Sports were to have been held this afternoon on the Basin Reserve, but as it has been raining all day of course they had to be postponed. Mrs Dudley Hewett (Rangitikei) has been staying with Mrs C. Job.n3ton. The Flower show is to be opened next Tuesday by His Excellency the Governor. It is to be held in the Skating Eink, and I hear that the exhibits, especially the roses, will be unusually fine. Siona.
