Working His Passage.
A Californian paper of the 16th September announces the arrival there of Mr Cecil J. fcUuarfc, formerly, of Masterton, who is, for a wager made with a Chiistchnrch friend, literally working his way to Boston, or New York, within a fixed time, for the purpose of ge ting a book on travels in Africa published. The chief condition of the wager was that Stuart should leave New Zealand without a peuny, and earn or walk every st.age of the journey. When in Wellington, after having started from Christchurch, he met with an accident which disabled him, and for many weeks he lay in the Hospital. From Auckland he worked his passage to San Francisco as a mail clerk; and in San Francisco he "raised the wind " by contributing Articles to various newspapers. Though the progress made from that stage up to the time of reaching Sacramento had not been very encouraging he was still hopeful of being able to accomplish his whim sical undertaking.
