HOLIDAY OR NOT ?
TO THE EDITOB OF THE HANAWAT* 9*)BU£.j? Sir,—lt does seem a great pity that the general storekeepers of our small town are W>t mmimom in giving their .employees! a hoJSay when such is called for, as for instance the purpose of atteadtaig^ late Palmerston Show, where there was a gathering Of about i%OQQ, persons. The largest gathering on the coast, Sir,' anct itf tfftftiinly did look a bit selfish to see the employer himself at the show and two' assist* ants left, behind to ran the business, and I am told did a fair day's business and no wonder, when such a mean advantage was taken of fe^ i oppositionists, and, Sir, being aft .' employee myself I sympathised HtUr* those two who were thus wronged out of their holiday. ; - It was said that it was unusual to keep close holiday on Show day, bttt I am told on reliable authority that it is invariably the rule for towns adjacent to that where Show is tobe held, to close. I think Sir, that in future we employees should wait on the Mayor and request him to declare a hali4ay; and not leave it to those interested 4o shelve the subject. It was also pointed out that the Paimerstoa * people do not close, but who can blame them when such a .vast: amount of foreign capital would be spent in their midst. We do exactly the same thing here op January 22nd, wJwvaU town§ are, a public holiday, and we are*opeiv because of the foreign capital, in «ur midst. And Sir, in concluaiou it roust have been «on?|taMl< & Bf 00* act of discourtesy Tib jus. ifUpi? storekeepers. !; ' Thanking you in anticipation for this space, for whichyouttiUdeform, < the best wishes of all employees- and their connections.: I*nvet<y,< Ajm-SWEATEH.
