Thomas' Efall was very prettily decorated for the occasion 4 and the supper 1 table looked very fiice with a decoration of arum lilies and buttef* cups while and gold are the colours of the L?agnp, so these flowers were very appropriatej The Premier Made a very pleasing little speech at the beginning of the evening. Mrs Seddon, who is the President of the League, was al-o prenettt, and wore a black nifivei - leux gown trimmed with velvet and jet, and palo heliotrope chiff n round the corsage ; Miss Ldd n looked very Well in black silk trimtn d with chiff >n frills, and hti* sister* w>re black. figured net over y.llxv si k ; L>dy B ick'ey wore a very hand oiu i i/lack brocade gown trimmed v\ith lac^ and sprays of yellow and dirk red chrysanthemums ; Mrs Ward also wore a handsome black gown trimmed with lace and head embroidery ; Mrs Pirani* black satin, the bodice trimmed with cerise velvet and jet ; Miss Faircbild wore a pretty white satin gown trimmed with lace ; rhe Misses Hutchison (Dunedin) wore black silk and net ; Miss Ling lovely orange satin trimmed with white lace. Me-dames K. Macdonald, Hales, Williams, Collins, and the Misses Williams, Stringer, Hyde, Bendall and others were also present, and among the gentlemen were Eons. Ward and Carroll, Messrs Pirani, Mills, Kelly, Collins Guinness, etc. ; A very excellent concert was given last Tuesday night in Thomas' Hall by Mr Maughan Barnett (Piano) and Herr M. Balling (Viola Alta) of Neison. Both these eminent gentlemen were loudly applauded and their beautiful playing was greatly ap predated .by the large audience present. Among whom were Lord aad Lady Glasgow, the latter wear ing a handsome ruby raerveilleux gown trimmed with velvet to match, grey corded silk opera cape trimmed wilh fur, and lined With pretty pink shot silk ; Lady Augusta Boyle wore a black silk skirt and pretty pale green silk blousu ; lady A'.ioe, black skirt and pae pink b ouse trimmed with chiff .m ; Lady Dorothy, white frock trimmed with lace ; Major Elliot, Captain Campbell Preston; .Mr James and Lady Hector, the latter Wearing black silk, with sleeves of very pale blue satin covered with black lace ; Miss Hector pretty pale blue gown trimmed with white lace ; Mrs W. H. Lnvin, Mrs and the Misses Menzies, Mrs and Miss Turnbull, the Misses Grace, Mrs and Mi*s B.ackett, Mrs and Miss Quick, Madam" Carlton, the Mi-ses Wil Haras Fraser (D.medtn), Nunnely, Gorn, Barber, Atkinson, Richmond, Davie , etc. Cornflowers and cor i flower blue is the newest colour and is much worn. 1 saw a hat rhn o her day, it Whs straw, of a blui h grey colour and was profusely trimmed with bunches of cornflower tulle and at one side was a spray of huge cornflowers standing up high am ng loops oi broad green grass. 1 did not think it at all becoming, but decidedly novel. White chip straw hats are among the newest, a pretty one I saw lately was a small cherryripe shape and was trimmed with large white chiff >n rosettes and a high spray of forget-me-nots and sticking in on-! of the rosettes was a pretty paste ornament on the end of a long pin. Paste ornaments are very ioMb used either for millinery purposes or for large ornamental buttons. Some quaint buttons have
