How the Frozen Meat trade is worked.
♦ Mr D. J. Nathan deserves the thank* of the farmers for tha plucky way in which he tackled the frozen moat question, in the face of big opposition. Though his proposals have not been adopted, he has given the farmers something to think about, and has ably defended his statements in every instance in which his position has been attacked. A striking pro if of the fact that tricks that are vain exist in the frozen meat trade has just been brought under our notice. A settler who sent some nheep Home ordered the account sales to be handed to a friend in London. This was done, but in the usual course account sales were also sent from the New Zealand office of the shippers to the original consignee. The consignee's astonishment may. be imagined when he received the originals from his friend in England, and found that the proceeds were really 30 per cent more than was shown in the statement be received. Where did the difference go? Evidently it was intended that it should have gone into the p >ckets of the meat salesman, and if other salesmen appropriate a similar proportion, in addition to their legitimate commission, it is evident that they make a good thing out of the farmer. It has always been evident that there has been a leakage somewhere. Is ! this the secret ? If so, it is time the farmer was protected from spoliation by the middle map.—The Pefh.
